Sun, sea and LOTS of sand greeted our 17 camp families for the first weekend camp of 2025 at a favourite Camp Autism spot, Jurien Bay. Along with some familiar faces, we were joined by a number of new families on their first away weekend with our band of wonderful friends.
A short walk to the jetty and foreshore meant ample opportunities for beach walks, a spot of fishing, or just taking in the surroundings with a beautiful sunset to behold
Saturday morning’s group activity brought us up close and personal with the MV High Voltage for a boat trip out on the water in search of Sea Lions on the various islands dotted around Jurien.
We weren’t disappointed as the many Sea Lions who call Jurien Bay home were more than happy enjoying their own beach time in their own groups. The sheer size of these animals grabbed everyone’s attention. We even caught a glimpse of a Bull Sea Lion, a 350kg giant amongst the females on the islands.
Back on dry land and following lunch we headed north from Jurien Bay to Sandy Cove for an afternoon of one of the great WA coastal activities, Sand boarding. Campers young and old took to the dunes for a fun packed session. For the kids the energy seemed endless, some of us older ones amongst the group tapped out after a few trips up the deceptively steep dunes.
It was truly amazing to see how some of the younger members of the group, although brand new to sand boarding, absolutely excelled at it.
After a busy day out and about, Saturday evening brought the traditional birthday cake and movies on the big screen. It was touch and go at one point as the wind threatened to prevent the screen from going up, but luckily for everyone it relented just in the nick of time.
Although Sunday Morning heralded the official end of the camp and the goodbyes that come with it, it was not necessarily the end of camp opportunities. A number of families took advantage of the local Natural Wonder that is the Nambung National Park and the Pinnacles to break up the trip home. A truly spectacular end to another wonderful weekend with the Camp Autism family.
Thanks to Kristen, Wayne and Loryn for organising this weekend. Stay tuned for our upcoming catchups, day and weekend camps. We’ll be releasing details soon.
