Busselton Camp 2024

1st - 3rd November

Our final weekend camp of 2024 was held overlooking the beautiful Geographe Bay in Busselton. 23 families joined us for the camp and although cooler weather was expected we were treated to 3 perfect spring days for another weekend of fun, friendship and frivolity for kids and parents alike.

We were lucky to be joined by not 1, but 2 Autism assistance dogs. Nyah and Sonic. They were quite possibly the most popular members of camp, and more than happy to enjoy all of the special attention.

Being right next to the beach meant that the chance to have a go at a spot of fishing was only steps away. Many tried, not many were successful. That’s why they call it fishing rather than catching though

Saturday brought on the excursions, the first being a visit to a hidden gem of a place called Mermaid’s Cave in the heart of Busselton. Contrary to most caves in the region this isn’t actually a cave, it’s a wonderland of all things aquatic. From the huge array of the most amazing sea shells, to the aquariums full of beautiful fish, eels, shellfish, starfish and corals (which we learnt are classed as animals due to them having central nervous systems), and not to forget Dave, the charismatic Pufferfish, it was a wonderful experience for all.

After lunch on the foreshore it was off to Capes Raptors in Margaret River. Not the dinosaur types of raptors, rather the modern bird of prey variety (the name raptor relates to the talons on their feet). Owls, eagles, falcons, hawks and kites live in the sanctuary, with experienced handlers giving demonstration shows. Alongside explaining a range of interesting facts about how important birds of prey are to the ecosystem, they let the birds show off a few of their party tricks, like plucking treats out of mid air whilst in full flight. It was quite the sight to see and a fascinating experience.

Back at base on Saturday evening with the traditional birthday cake for those who had celebrated a birthday since the last camp followed by an outdoor movie on the big screen was the ideal way to relax after a big day of adventure for the kids, with parents having a chance to chat and share stories.

As ever, Sunday morning checkout came round all too quickly and the camp group started to head their separate ways. Maybe tired, but with cups full and spoons replenished. An all too brief weekend where a community comes together and friendships were created, renewed or strengthened.

A big thank you to Kat, John and Megan for organising everything, and we’ll see you all again soon for more worldly adventures
